Portage Country Club
About
Portage Country Club is situated along the scenic shores of Swan Lake. Opened in 1930, the golf course has a traditional layout that is both challenging and playable. At 6,356 yards from the back tees, it is shorter than most championship courses you will find today but the layout still has plenty to offer besides length. There is a mix of holes that are wide-open and some that are framed by stands of mature trees. The rolling terrain provides subtle but tricky undulations in the greens and fairways as well as the occasional double-tiered green. One of the most memorable holes for both its level of difficulty and the scenery is the par-4 third. This no. 1 handicap hole plays along the lake and forces you to keep a close eye on the target.

Pre-Fourth
The course is in very nice condition. There are some unique holes on this course which makes it fun. We played in a twosome. We played behind a foursome. The course was very crowded. There was a huge gap between the foursome and the next group ahead of them. They were unbelievably slow at the turn, it took 49 minutes to play the 10th and 11th hole. They would hurry off the tee so we could not play through. I would recommend a course ranger checking on pace of play on super busy days. That was it, we turned the cart around and left. I told the folks at the club house but no satisfaction. I would NEVER recommend playing there during a crowded date. Every time slot was full from very early until after noon. In addition the course allowed sixsomes on the course as well and ran out of carts so get an early team time.
bunkers
Overall we both enjoyed golf course Sand bunkers were not up to our liking We are used to smoother and softer sand Worth the drive from Madison We will come back
Always fun
Temp pushing upper 80s with humidity but the refreshments truck must have checked with me at least 5 times during my 18 holes. Friendly staff and great conditions. Hole 5 and 6 were a little boggy but we recently had heavy rain so not too bad. Will continue to play this course.
A decent course.
Old fashioned with some tight trees. Greens a little slow with some shaggy cups.
Good course layout
Good course layout. Some of the fairways are narrow. Course was in very good shape.
When other courses are too expensive....
This is a very moderately priced course. Actually quite appropriate for its quality. This is neither a destination course nor one to avoid. Some holes play well and others are not enticing. Cart paths are irregularly maintained with most either dirt or choppy asphalt. Was looking forward to playing it but after I was done I felt like I didn't want to come back unless I couldn't find another option. Can't go wrong on the price but not worth much more. Could use an infusion of funds to improve it.
Best value for the money in the dells
This course seems to be a hidden secret to the Dells tourists who continue to pay 3 to 4 times the price for courses within 30 minutes of here. But I sure do hope they keep playing in the Dells as this keeps this course playing at a great pace. 8 of us played on a Saturday afternoon and we finished in 4 hours, i know we could not haver done that at other courses in the area. Greens were in excellent shape. Staff is excellent, food and drinks are reasonably priced.
Good Course!
I am not a very experienced golfer, but I've done enough to know that this is a quality course. Plenty of hazards. Played with someone who managed to put one In the water from two tee boxes over! I'm not a very good golfer either, and this offered a very good challenge to me.
Great Value on a well maintained Course
This course is in very good condition. It's challenging for its length due to some tight fairways and small quick greens. Bring your course management game and enjoy the challenging, friendly atmosphere!!!
Bargan
Stop in the club house and enjoy the view of Swan Lake and the friendly people. Good service and Joyce makes it fun. The course is extremely difficult so don't worry about your score. The greens were in good shape but reading the putts was a level beyond me.
Nice country course
Super price on golf now and drove from the dells to play one of the best values we had all week.
slow play
Waited at 17 holes and skipped the last hole, still talking almost 5 hours. Need ranger to control extremely slow play.
Quality golf
Portage CC is a little out of the way but the drive is well worth it and with the discounts they are offering these days, it is one of the best values in the state. The course has many unique holes. Although they have lost some trees in the past 15 years, between the trees and some lowlands, it is tighter than most courses you will play and can be difficult for the average player. This can lead to inconsistent pace of play, as it's easy to get into serious trouble especially if you don't know how to play certain holes. Greens are in great shape and depeding on the pin positions can be quite tricky.
The bar/restaurant overlooking Swan Lake has a great view and the staff is very accomodating.
Enjoyed our golf here
The course was in good shape and was a challenging course. The staff was friendly and professional. We enjoyed our round.
challenging greens
Interesting fairways and excellent greens staff very helpfull very good value
Very nice course!!!
Very nice course to play!!! It has some hard holes that make the course fun to play!
Great Place for the Money
Cloudy, foggy and busy but a good course to be on will go back soon
This course has some interesting shots from tee boxes
Great course, some open fairways, some wooded and narrow, great par 3 holes
worth the trip
Not far from my house, but I've only played here a couple times. Should hit this one more often but I'm amongst an embaressment of riches in regard to top notch golf within an hour of my home in any direction. This is hands down the best value in south-central Wisconsin! Smallish, "old time" greens were a tad bumpy, fast, and very undulated....tough but fun....with some "sunday" pin placements. Fairways were ok...not specracular, but good. Rough was a bit long requiring some lengthy ball searches....a frequent phenomenum 'round here the last few years....high fuel costs? The layout is very diversified from tree-lined to links style, lot of dog legs, some total blind shots, and some narrow, challenging approaches.....plan on hitting every stick in the bag. The staff is friendly and helpful. The only downer we experienced (a threesome) was a VERY unskilled foresome holding us up the first 6 holes not letting us play thru. We looped back 3 holes....nobody behind us....and caught them on 15...oh well. I'll hit this one more often this summer, we had a great timr
