Portage Country Club
About
Portage Country Club is situated along the scenic shores of Swan Lake. Opened in 1930, the golf course has a traditional layout that is both challenging and playable. At 6,356 yards from the back tees, it is shorter than most championship courses you will find today but the layout still has plenty to offer besides length. There is a mix of holes that are wide-open and some that are framed by stands of mature trees. The rolling terrain provides subtle but tricky undulations in the greens and fairways as well as the occasional double-tiered green. One of the most memorable holes for both its level of difficulty and the scenery is the par-4 third. This no. 1 handicap hole plays along the lake and forces you to keep a close eye on the target.

Fast Round - even with 2 teanagers
Fast pace. Fairly short course. Some challenging holes. Watch out for the mosquitos and horse flies. Sand traps were rock hard, maybe due to all the rain. Cost was very low, almost 3x lower than what I normally play in the Houston area. Locker rooms are in need of some TLC, but that hopefully will happen when more people play this good value for money course.
Great Course, Great Restaurant
Enjoyed our 18 holes so much! It's not easy but it's within the realm of possibility for an average golfer to snag a few pars. Lots of variation in the holes and greens, enough to challenge but not overwhelm.
After our round, we had delicious grouper sandwiches and fries on the restaurant deck overlooking the gorgeous Swan Lake.
This a good course that could be better
First three holes are too tight and narrow with fencing needed to protect tee boxes on one and number two green. Would recommend bringing insect repellant as rain day before and the proximity of nearby lake caused and influx of bugs on first 3 -4 holes. After those holes the insects were not problematic. I did enjoy the course but I thought it was overrated. On a scale of 10 I would rate this course a 6 or 7 but I would play it again. One reason I would return is the view of the lake and the food from the restaurant next club house. Best mushroom and swiss burger i have ever had. Each person in our foursome had a different entree and each agreed their selection was excellent. Ate outside and insects were not a problem. Rate this a 10.
Good value
Nice course and good value. Holes are challenging with water hazards, altitude changes and dog legs.
First round at Portage C.C.
This course has several blind tee shots, some are "Bell" holes that can slow play if the group in front doesn't use them. The greens are small to medium in size and can be challenging if your above the hole. If you're playing this course for the first time, be sure to get the yardage book from the pro shop.
Nice course.
Friendly staff. Course was in good shape. Speed of play was good. We will be back.
Great Course
Always have a good experience at Portage Country Club. Many Golf Course complain about Golf Now customers and give you the cold shoulder, but not at Portage Golf Course. Very Nice people.
Avid golfer
The course is in great shape. Including the greens. The first 3 holes are tight and difficult but it opens up after that. There are some very challenging holes, but overall a great place to play.
good course
Portage CC was in real good shape. Challenging greens. A bit soggy because of rain but it was in decent shape.
Great value
Nice long course, nothing of the fancy, super nice and beautiful cart girl, they did serve me an outdated beer, but other than that great value, especially when you book through golf now, wouldn't pay to play regular rates!
fun fun
a fun and challenging course
Fast greens
The course was in very good condition. The greens were the fastest I could ever remember them being. Play moved right along.
Great Day of Golf
My wifes birthday we had a great day out at Portage and wouldn't recommend it highly.
Keep your eyes open, may be dangerous.
Tough course to review. Some holes are quite dangerous due to tee boxes and greens being too close.
Did not appreciate dodging sprinklers all day. Understand course needed water, but at 11:00 AM, with lots of golfers out, timing could of been better planned. That being said, course had nice greens, and nice layout with exception of some holes being too close, and dangerous. Very slow play, Marshal needed.
Needs more upkeep
Fairways were in good shape. The rough was only weeds and dirt. Sand in the bunkers was ok. Needed maintenance around the bunkers. Greens were ok. Rolled decently. Pace of play was terrible. On this day there were some local residents with private golf carts driving around the course and not playing. A little distracting. Etiquette of others playing was poor. No divots filled, bunkers raked. Layout and design left me scratching my head (ie: 289 yd par 4 (very short) followed by a 231 yd par 3 from the white tees-which is very long for the average golfer). Challenging par 5s required some thinking and shot making. Staff was very friendly. Food and drinks were good. This course is in a beautiful setting and has potential to be a really nice track with some more care and maintenance.
Portage CC is Excellent
The course is in great shape and very challenging. The staff are friendly and helpful lead by the head pro Mark Braska. He is always helpful and accommodating to all the players.
