Trappers Turn Golf Club in the Wisconsin Dells
Despite the natural beauty of the Wisconsin Dells area, golf didn't play much of a role in the outdoor recreation scene until 1991, when Trappers Turn Golf Club opened. Trappers Turn offers 27 meticulously groomed holes of golf designed by Andy North and Roger Packard. The varied topography of The Dells makes for a lovely pastiche of golf holes.

Northern Bay Golf Resort and Marina is a superb replica course in the Wisconsin Dells. Designed by Matt Mootz, the 7,223-yard course also features 11 original holes, some of which are more memorable than the replicas.

Erin Hills Golf Course outside of Milwaukee
Erin Hills Golf Course is a links course out in Wisconsin farmland that's emerged as the favorite to host the 2017 U.S. Open. It's only about a 40-minute drive from downtown Milwaukee but feels like it's another world away.

Wild Rock Golf Club in Wisconsin Dells
Wild Rock Golf Club is a 7,414-yard Hurdzan/Fry design laid out to take advantage of the Wisconsin Dells' rolling hills, plentiful water, and limestone bluffs and outcroppings. Micheal Hurdzan calls the course "one of the top 10 we've ever done."

Best of Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run at Kohler in pictures
The village of Kohler, about two hours north of Chicago, is home to arguably the best foursome of courses at one resort. Pete Dye built two generations of golf courses, first the River and Meadow Valleys at Blackwolf Run, followed by the acclaimed Straits and Irish courses at Whistling Straits, just a few miles down the road on the shores of Lake Michigan.
