Won't Find a Better Experience

The Sand Valley Resort is incredible. The golf, the staff, the food, the location, everything was amazing. I went for a quick 2 day trip and was able to play Mammoth Dunes twice and Sand Valley once. Mammoth is not as challenging as SV, but is such a fun course. Super wide fairways, large greens and large bunkers make this course a bombers paradise, but accuracy still matters if you want to have the right angles into pins/greens. The course was in excellent condition and the onsite staff and amenities were all very pleasant. The food here is a hidden gem with $1 sandwiches, hot dogs and tacos. Also reasonably priced beer and liquor. Overall an amazing experience and I can't wait to go back.

Simply Amazing

No golf course has ever made me feel like Mammoth Dunes did. I pride myself on a great sense of direction, but I was completely lost while traversing Mammoth’s incredible landforms. Some courses make you feel like you’re separated from the rest of the world, but here, you feel like you’re on your own planet. I have never been as excited to hit golf shots in my life. The variety of landscapes and shot requirements are out of this world. There’s nothing like watching a golf ball bound, ricochet, and tumble on these enormous golf holes. You have a stadium all to yourself and it’s hard not to smile. It’s a routing masterpiece. Sand Valley is a really special place and Mammoth Dunes just might be the best (and most fun) course I’ve ever played. I’m already planning my next trip.

A Mammoth you wont forget

We were fortunate enough to stay on site for 4 days and play this course twice. It’s was enjoyable for me at a 12 handi and my brother in law who totes a 27. It was unforgettable fun, for everyone in our group of 16 golfers. The layout was great and with the wide fairways that you can’t miss....except the fairway bunkers that called to me a few times, made the pace of play just right. We never waited and never held anyone up. This is a top 10 destination for any golf group who likes to stay and play rather then drive all over to get to play a great set of courses like the two they have on site. Great caddies made golfing there a pleasure. Great pro shop also with fair pricing

A Top 5 Bucket List Course

There are few golf courses I've played that ellicit an emotion other than just "this is a great golf course" or "I'm having a lot of fun out here". There's a handful of them that raise that emotion to another level, to an almost spiritual nirvana. I'm talking about that feeling of "I wish I could stay here forever" kind of thing. Tobacco Road, Gamble Sands, and now Mammoth Dunes is added to that list (along with its sister course, Sand Valley).

Like Gamble Sands (central Washington), Mammoth Dunes is a David McLay-Kidd design and incorporates some of my very favorite golf course features. It's very much a links-style course with very firm fairways and greens that reward you for creativity and strategic play. Aiming for the center of fairways and at the pins on the greens isn't the best way to play here. The design pushes you to think outside the (tee) box and look left, right, front, and back of where you think the target landing spot is because often times the best option is one of those.

There are so many incredible holes throughout the course and amongst the group of 16 that I played with, each golfer had their own favorites. For me the highlights were the par-4 6th with the horseshoe green, the par-3 13th that is nestled in the ridge, and of course the driveable par-4 14th.

The course conditions are world-class (as you'd expect for the price) and it's a lot of fun to experience the tough, firm, fescue turf. You just don't get this kind of golfing experience hardly anywhere else in the US.

The price is, well, it's daunting to say the least. I think this will be my last $200+ round I ever play and it's not because this course doesn't deserve the price tag--it very much does. But I played poorly and paying $50/hour to play poorly just doesn't sit well with a "budget golfer" like me. This is a tough course and I think I could better endure some rough play when it's in that $110-165 range.

Even still, this is a fantastic course and a one-of-a-kind experience. Every golfer should play here at least once.

Incredible Scale

You can't believe the size and scale of Mammoth Dunes at Sand Valley resort until you see it with your own eyes. I thought I was prepared, but I was totally blown away by the sheer width of the fairways and size of the greens. It's like nothing I've ever seen before.

Mammoth Dunes is definitely a 2nd shot golf course. While there are a few well placed fairway bunkers, the majority of your tee shots will find the fairway, but that's where the challenge begins.

The greens at Mammoth Dunes are firm and fast with an unreal amount of slope. You have to hit your ball to the right spots on greens to have a chance at birdie, while wayward shots will leave you with a difficult 2 putt. Bogey is an easy score to get on this course, but par and birdie is a bit tougher.

The fine fescue in the fairways and greens is a really firm playing surface, so the course plays much shorter than it's yardage. That being said, I still recommend you play it forward as you'll want shorter clubs into the challenging greens.

The greens to come off as gimmicky in a few places to me. There were a couple of times when I hit the shot exactly where my caddie told me to, but ended up just on the wrong side of a slope or on top of a slope, leading to a 3 putt.

Overall Mammoth Dunes is a must play if you love golf. At $225 it's an expensive round. When I go back I will look for shoulder season opportunities, as the course would be an incredible value at half it's stated price.

My favorite hole is the long par 4 5th. The view from the tee is incredible, the approach offers options and the green is very fair.

Mammoth Dunes even Better!

After playing our morning round at Sand Valley... it was time to play the second of the two courses. Couldn't believe it, but thought Mammoth was even better! Not sure if it was because we got the first round jitters out playing at Sand, and were much more ready for our Second Round on Mammoth. Regardless, what a great time on Mammoth. Fairways were even more wide open, same goes for the greens. Have not stayed on property yet as a friend of ours has lake house on Castle Rock Lake. For Labor Day Weekend, we are staying on site at Sand Valley. Further reviews to come! You gotta make the trip up to Sand Valley Golf Resort!

Fantastic, unique course

Mammoth Dunes is the newest 18 hole course at Sand Valley and while both are top notch, my opinion is Mammoth Dunes is the more unique, more dramatic and more enjoyable course at the resort. Despite the dramatic views and terrain, the Mammoth Dunes course is extremely playable for all abilities. The massive sand dunes the course is routed along combined with extreme elevation changes and large, undulating green complexes make this one of the most enjoyable courses I've played to date. If you can get an early season or late season day with good weather, the value is extremely appealing as well.

Wild course in the glacier sand of Wisconsin

Course is visually and strategically stunning. Sand is everything and completely different than anything I had previously played. Course has nice land movement and the greens are what you would expect from

SO MUCH FUN TO PLAY MD at SV

Mammoth Dunes at San Valley is a great golf experience. The course routing is a roller coaster of a ride. All 18 holes are great. Had 4 birdies on back 9 alone and never saw the course before, that always makes it fun. The course was routed through the V Ridge on property perfectly. What a great complement to the Sand Valley course. Love the difference between courses and can't wait to go back when the 3rd course is done.

Also the hospitality and quality of food on site is wonderful. Make the trip to SV

Not your typical Wisconsin course here.

Mammoth Dunes is remarkable, this is certainly not something you see in Wisconsin. As you sit on the first tee and see all the sand and huge dunes its amazing what they have done with this property. This a a must get to bucket list course/resort it is stunning.

The 1st hole is crazy 100 yard wide fairway par 4, what a way to ease you into a round. After that it just gets more and more fun. Huge sand traps (that are easily playable). Boomerang greens #6 , drive able and I mean easily drive able par 4 14th the whole hole slops right do the hole, and big elevation changes, with crazy undulating greens. There is nothing not to love able this place.

I really enjoyed the 10-14 hole stretch. 10 is a great dogleg par 4. 11 is a beautiful par 5 with a huge bunker in the middle of the fairway. 12 is a downhill par 4 with a huge mound guarding the green/hole. 13 is a short par 3 with a narrow green and bunkers galore. Finally 14 is the drive able par 4 that is just so well designed.

This place does not disappoint. Rooms are great. Food is delicious. Half-way house has amazing food at cheap prices. Haven't been to Bandon yet but loved this place more than Kohler just in an all round fun place to go and enjoy golf and your buddies.

Overall, Disappointed

Mamouth Dunes and Sand Valley was nice, but disappointing. Having played Streamsong and many other high end golf destination courses, my expectations were high. Mamouth Dunes was dry, greens very hard, putting difficult. Course is open off the tee, there is a ton of large sand bunkers and waste areas and its difficult to stop the ball near the hole, and I am a good player. The two big disappointments were the driving range/practice area (tons of divots, no real targets just a totally flat range with 4-5 pins like a muni range and the pace of play. Almost 5 hours and we only finished 10 minutes after the group in front of us. The clubhouse was nice, but some basics are missing like a decent size locker room (basement) and no fitting room in the proshop,

A modern marvel

Mammoth Dunes shoots up my list of maybe among the top 25 courses I've ever played (out of more than 1,000). It's such a creative, thoughtful interpretation of what a modern golf course should look and play like.
It will give (I made three birdies) and it will take too (I made a whopping 8 3-putts). Everything is supersized, from the fairways to the greens to the waste bunkers.
There are endless scoring opportunities if you play the proper angles, especially on the two drivable par 4s. I drove the downhill 14th with a 5-wood for a simple birdie. It was interesting that our caddie told everyone to layup on the short 6th. After making birdie, I saw why. The guy behind us drove his ball onto the left side of the kidney-shaped green, while we were putting to the pin on the right side. That ball had no chance to be putted close to the hole, so his risk-reward tee shot wasn't in the 'A' position. Good fun.

Unforgettable

Hard to believe this course is located here as I drove miles through rural Wisconsin. Once you arrive, the facility and experience are 1st class. Driving range, practice area, putting green, second to none. Staff both on and off the course really make you feel like it’s all about you today. Now on to the course......18 fantastic holes, one after another. Fairways are extremely forgiving, and grass appears to be a fescue which is different than the bent grass most commonly seen in this part of the country. With all the sand, you get a thumping sensation when you hit the ground at times. Chipping around the greens can be tricky as the lies are tight. I recommend running the ball on as much as possible. Greens don’t check as much as others, so allow for one club less as ball rolls out. The greens are ENORMOUS, and offer great options for pins and tactics to play. Yes, there is a lot of sand, but the course is playable for the average player. The vistas from many tees is breathtaking, and the expansive area for each hole can offer a lot of solitude in a peaceful way. I won’t go into hole descriptions, but they are really fun, with the par 3’s being the most interesting. May rate of $155 was a very reasonable price. This is a walking only course, with caddies available. If you live in the Upper Midwest, it’s a bucket list course !

Mammoth Dunes at Sand Valley Golf Resort - Best Inland Midwest Course I've Played

The Good: David McLay-Kidd has constructed the flagship masterpiece at Sand Valley Golf Resort, Mike Keiser's budding golf resort in middle Wisconsin. Even more expansive in scale compared to Coore & Crenshaw's Sand Valley course, it features some of the most awe-inspiring sand dune vistas that you will ever see on a golf course. Arguably the best mixture and collection of Par 4's I've played, each with a fair target off the tee but a risk-reward opportunity to score. Several are drivable! Excellent Par 5's that require strategic placement on the approach shots and can be conquered with excellent long iron play. Par 3's are particularly strong, most notably the 8th with a sand engulfed peninsula green, and the 16th with a downhill shot over the largest dune on the course. Fabulous views of the closing holes from the brand new clubhouse. In excellent shape considering the course is in its infancy. Great service and friendly staff. The uber nice pull carts are a nice touch.

The Bad: The greens can be considered TOO large and don't putt quite as quick as the Sand Valley course. Practice facilities require a bus trip from the clubhouse and is a slight annoyance. Limited on-course restroom areas or service.

The Verdict: Mammoth Dunes is the best inland public golf course in the Midwest that I've played. As fair, fun and memorable a course as you will ever play. Playing during the shoulder season during the fall is the way to go!

Best Hole(s): There are so many to choose from, but the downhill Par 4 #5 is one of the most beautiful settings at the the whole resort. Will be one of many spots where pictures are taken. My favorite hole is actually the long Par 4 2nd hole. A tough driving hole and then approach to a demanding, massive green.

Maybe the best course built in the last decade

I would highly recommend not playing this course in the fall (the frost delay delayed my tee time almost 2 hours), but man this course is good! The sheer quality of the holes is just unreal from the start to finish, with each hole standing out along the way. The fourth hole marks the point when you realize that this course is really something special (If you’ve played here you know what I mean). It’s an uphill par 3 with an infinity green that lies on one of the highest points on the course, and the view from the top is enough to take your breath away. From here you get a little taste of what’s ahead, buybacks I’ll save that because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t played here. Pictures don’t do this place justice, so just hurry up and play it already! I can’t wait to see where this course places on the top 100 list!

30 minutes backup at the turn

We were going along nicely on the front 9. We then got to current turn area and found what would ruin the rest of the round.
As we approached the tent we noticed a large crowd gathering. What we found out that there was one group teeing off in ten and it was not the group in front of us.
We noticed that there were 3 groups, including us waiting to tee off .
Probably 30 minutes to tee off on 10 and the backup continued thru the whole back 9
